Pioneer 11
NASA's Pioneer mission was the first planetary mission to a giant planet, launched on March 2, 1972. The Pioneer spacecraft used spin to maintain its pointing on its long journey. Its signal was last received on on Jan. 23, 2003. Its twin, Pioneer 11 was launched on April 6, 1973, and became the first spacecraft to fly past Saturn.
